The annual collaboration between the Perennial Artisan Ales and the south St. Louis coffeehouse, Sump Coffee, and its owner Scott Carey is one I look forward to every year. The imperial stout is made from coffee grown in the Monte Alban region of Oaxaca, Mexico – and roasted in Saint Louis by Carey. The base stout is smooth and chocolatey, complemented by notes of pecan, toffee, pear, and vanilla. Sweet and bitter are balanced against each other, swirling around the full-bodied stout base to create a powerfully rich, yet amazingly crisp drinking experience. 11.5% ABV.
But now, it’s time for the return of Barrel-Aged Sump. This year’s BA Sump 2022 is an imperial stout aged in whiskey barrels with coffee from Peru La Convención roasted by Sump Coffee. A blend of stouts with a barrel breakdown of 20% 21 month aged in Weller Barrels, 20% 20 month aged bourbon barrels, 30% 20 month aged in Rittenhouse Rye, and 30% 20 month aged in Wild Turkey barrels. This beer is big, with a 13.6% ABV.
As with all coffee beers, you are encouraged to store cold and drink fresh.
