Rod’s Cream Ale | Public House Brewing Company
STYLE: Cream Ale
ABV: 5.4%
IBU: 16
RATE BEER RATING: 34
BREWERY COMMENTS:While most modern styles of American craft beer originated elsewhere in the world, Cream Ale was born right here at home. We’ve found a lot to like in this golden little beauty: prominent malt notes complimented by a flaked maize aroma that bubbles up through the carbonation, elegantly balanced by noble hops. Named in honor of its creator–Public House Brewer Rod Murray–we think this beer can be summed up in three big words: American. Golden. Original.
drinkMObeer COMMENTS (Andrew): A damn refreshing beer, this beaut gently guides you to the next. The easy drinkin’ Cream features a nice light golden color with some refreshing carbonation, especially when poured in the classic flute. I was hit with some strong aromas of malt and slight fruitiness. The flavor profile matches, with a malty, corn-like sweetness and a moderate mouthfeel to match. Just a hint of hop bitterness offsets this otherwise sweet brew. Finishes smooth and clean, preparing for the next swig. Solid dinner drinker.
Wolpertinger (2016) | Urban Chestnut Brewing Company
STYLE: American Strong Ale
ABV: 7.3%
IBU: 35
RATE BEER RATING: 83
BREWERY COMMENTS: Never heard of the rarely seen, Bavarian-indigenous mammal the Wolpertinger? Well, much like the original Wolpertinger, our “Wolpie” is a little Bavarian in nature, scarcely seen and definitely difficult to define…taxonomically speaking. We define “Wolpie” (beer-style wise) as Winged Nut on Acid – A high ABV, chestnut beer fermented with a Bavarian Weissbier yeast strain. Stats: ABV – 7.3%, IBUs – 35, OG – 18.0 Plato.
drinkMObeer COMMENTS (Tim): One of my favorite winter time beer festivals in St. Louis. The Wolpertinger is the celebrated beer of the same name. The best way to describe it is take a belgian style beer and age it in bourbon barrels with a little bit of a sour taste. This is a beer that only gets better with age. If you are fortunate enough make sure you check out the Wolpertinger Festival where you will find annual variations of this beer. Personally I enjoyed the 2013 Wolpertinger aged in a wine barrel.
TIPA | Schlafly Beer
STYLE: American IPA
ABV: 7.2%
IBU: 60
BEER ADVOCATE RATING: 94
RATE BEER RATING: 99
BREWERY COMMENTS: Our Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.
India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.
drinkMObeer COMMENTS (Tim): Some of my favorite – Australian hops give this beer a full flavor. Certainly reminiscent of a tropical stye IPA, I certainly wish this could be a year round beer, definitely a favorite of mine from an established St. Louis brewery. Get it while it you can.
MILF | Mother’s Brewing Company
STYLE: Imperial Stout
ABV: 11%
IBU: 50
BEER ADVOCATE RATING: 93
RATE BEER RATING: 100
BREWERY COMMENTS: You’re in for a treat with this one. Brewed with cocoa nibs and raisins and then lovingly aged in rum, sherry, bourbon, brandy and whiskey barrels, this big beer takes on flavors from the spirit and wood of each barrel. The end result is a complex and elegant companion that’s right for carefree nights of privilege and excess.
drinkMObeer COMMENTS (Andrew): A decadent brew that is worth the wait. This dark, full bodied, yet oh-so-smooth elixir features complex notes including raisins followed by a very slight booziness from it’s aging in five spirit barrels. The tongue is also coated in smooth dark chocolate notes and finishes with good notes of whiskey and rum. Pick this one up while you can!
Burton-on-Holt | The Civil Life Brewing Company
STYLE: English Strong Ale
ABV: 6.1%
IBU: 35
BREWERY COMMENTS: Our first-ever holiday release is an allusion to world-renowned Burton Ale, brewed in 18th & 19th Century Burton-on-Trent, England. Ours is proudly brewed on Holt Avenue in St. Louis honouring the traditional brewing techniques and mineral-rich water which made the English malts and hops sing! Enjoy the rich caramel sweetness with a big bready mouthfeel which magically finishes dry. Somehow crisp and creamy, citrusy, with hints of almond butter and cacao nibs. Pairs magnificently with whatever you’re eating, whatever you’re doing, and wherever you’re going this holiday season. Export-strength so you can spread the good cheer far and wide!
drinkMObeer COMMENTS (Chris): The Civil Life Brew Co does the English Style sooo well. Burton-on-Holt is no exception, it pours a deep brown with an off white head. The aroma of caramel and malt comes to the forefront, but I also pick up toffee and bread. Taste is English to the core, nutty, malty, bitter, dry…16 ounces of amazing. Prost!
Plush | 4 Hands Brewing Company
STYLE: Saison
BREWERY COMMENTS: Plush is a saison brewed with grape in celebration of the New Year. This light and effervescent beer is dry-hopped with Nelson Sauvin which contributes a delicate white wine fruitiness. Plush pours straw in color with a firm white head.
drinkMObeer COMMENTS (Chris): Plush poured a hazy golden color with a thin white head. The aroma was grapey, fruity, a bit spicy and a little on the dank side. The taste, mmm, mmm, mmm, Saison deliciousness. Has a tart fruity flavor with a touch of sweetness and has a dry finish. Prost!
