Back in my college days at the University of Arizona, tequila was the house drink at any party or bar. Back then, we drank anything in a bottle that had the word Tequila on it, and that bottle usually had a worm in it. Back then tequila could be your friend or it could be something sinister. Now years later, I’ve come to realize that those two tequila options were simply based on the fact that we were drinking crap. Crap I say.
Call it maturity, call it a refined palate, – call it whatever you want, but I now understand tequila, or at least I understand that I don’t want to drink crap anymore. In my journey back to tequila, it is interesting to note that I found my way back, via bourbon. In my exploration of the whiskey world, I found new doors opening, new flavors to try and experience. This eventually led me back to my old friend, sans the worm. My rediscovery of tequila added a new branch of drinking pleasure once lost in the haze of college stupidity.
Like good whiskey, the chance to sample really good tequila is one that should not passed up, which is why I wanted to let you know about an unique opportunity to try a first of its kind tequila from the El Mayor distillery in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Fourth generation El Mayor Distillery Owner Graciela Gonzalez will be on hand as the Gamlin Restaurant Group releases the first-ever single barrel of El Mayor Extra Añejo tequila. The tequila will be unveiled at the El Mayor Extra Añejo Single Barrel Tequila Release Party at Sub Zero Vodka Bar on Wednesday, Aug. 10 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m.
The single-barrel El Mayor tequila will be added to the extensive single-barrel whiskey selection available at Gamlin Whiskey House and Sub Zero Vodka Bar.
“We have had tremendous success with our single-barrel whiskey program. When we were given the opportunity to be the first to offer a single-barrel of El Mayor Extra Añejo tequila we jumped at the chance,” says Gamlin Restaurant Group Proprietor Derek Gamlin. “It is a great opportunity for our guests to try something they can’t have anywhere else but at a Gamlin Restaurant Group establishment.”
Gonzalez hosted the Gamlins at the El Mayor distillery earlier this year and assisted them in selecting the tequila. El Mayor Extra Añejo tequila is 100% agave tequila aged in American white oak barrels for a minimum of three and a half years. This amber-hued tequila is full-bodied with a nose of dried fruit, caramel, and smoky flavors.
Gonzalez, who serves as a brand ambassador for El Mayor and the family’s tequila distillery, will be signing bottles of the new tequila at the event.
Tickets to the release party at Sub Zero Vodka Bar are available to the public for $50 each and include tequila tastings, signature cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and special event bottle pricing.
Tickets are available at www.subzerovodkabar.com. The tequila will retail for $90 per bottle at Sub Zero Vodka Bar and Gamlin Whiskey House, it will be available for $80 at the release party.
