Beer karma led me to the only place in STL to find Toppling Goliath brew

Beer Of The Week

Last week was a busy one for me as I had to travel out of town to Washington D.C. for the day job. While I was there, I missed an email regarding the debut of some pretty special beer to the St. Louis market.

Upon my return home, I spent one night at home and then hopped in the car for a quick overnight trip to Milwaukee to see a Friday night concert featuring Bare Naked Ladies and Better Than Ezra at the Riverside Theater.

Before the show, I sought out the brew and hospitality of the Milwaukee Ale House, the tap room of the Milwaukee Brewing Company. We were sitting sat at the bar when we struck up a conversation with a nice couple from suburban Milwaukee. After discussing our favorite beers, the gentleman asked if I had heard of an Iowa brewery called Toppling Goliath. I told him I had, but had never tried their beer. He mentioned that the breweries hometown of Decorah, Iowa was just about 4 hours west of Milwaukee, and highly recommended I make the visit.  Sadly, I had to be back in St. Louis the next day and could not make the trip.

Then karma kicked in. As we were driving into town, my wife caught a Facebook post announcing of all things, the debut of Toppling Goliath at St. Louis’ newest beer bar, the Brew Hub off Oakland Avenue.

As Karma would have it, we were just about to the Oakland exit off Interstate 64 eastbound. So, with a bit of nifty driving, we crossed a few lanes, got off and headed straight to the only place in St. Louis where you can find Dorothy’s New World Lager, Pompeii IPA, Golden Nugget IPA and Pseudo Sue Pale Ale, all available on draft and in 4-pack 16oz cans to go.

Dorothy’s New World Lager

5.5% ABV • 11 IBU

Named after the founder’s grandmother, Dorothy’s is described as their “Classic Beauty”. Mild in body, easy going and clean in taste, each sip charms the senses with distinct flavor and refreshing simplicity. Just like Grandma Dorothy, this unfiltered lager will forever be dear to your heart.

Pompeii India Pale Ale

6.2% ABV • 50 IBU

This IPA is created with the same attention to detail as the beautiful mosaics that graced the walls of prominent buildings in the city of Pompeii.

It features mango and pineapple hop flavors with a medium-body feel to tantalize the senses.

Golden Nugget India Pale Ale

6.8% ABV • 45 IBU

A winning combination of golden promise malt and nugget hops, this IPA delivers a bouquet of hop, citrus and evergreen aromas, followed by a floral sweetness.

Bold, hop-forward taste captivates the senses, leaving behind a pleasant bitterness that lingers in the finish.

Pseudo Sue Pale Ale

6.8% ABV • 45 IBU

This single hop pale ale showcases the Citra hop for a well-balanced beer that is delicate in body with a mild bitterness in the finish.

She roars with ferocious aromas of grapefruit, citrus, mango, and evergreen. Pseudo Sue’s unique taste is clean and bright with just enough bite!
