It’s Barleywine time at Public House Brewing Company

The good folks at Public House Brewing in Rolla, Mo. has announced that the annual release of their Barleywine-Style Ale will be at the seventh annual Rolla Ale-Iversay Saturday, January 20 at the Rolla R&D Brewpub.

With a 10.5% ABV, it is a big beer, and “the ideal warming winter beer.”  Described by the brewers as having a pleasant sweet dried fruit and caramel character balanced by hop bitterness.

So what’s with the name? Barleywine is indeed a beer. The word wine is used due to its alcoholic strength comparable to wine, but since it is derived from a grain rather than fruit, it’s definitely a beer.
