I got my first sip of Perennial’s Abraxas ’17 the other night at Louie’s Dive Bar in Clayton, Missouri. The bar there received one keg of the fall nectar, and since I was not able to get my own bottles this year, I jumped at the chance.
It lived up to all expectations. Deep cocoa brown and looks as rich as it tastes. Cocoa dominates but in perfect balance with hints of chili peppers, coffee and a bit of cinnamon. As the last sip disappeared, my mind began to fast forward to wondering when another Perennial favorite would return. Sump is what I’m talking about friends.
The Sump Coffee Stout 2017 was one of the highlights of early 2017, and this past week, Johnathan Moxey release some information to whet our appetites for what’s to come for 2018.
At its core, Barrel Aged Sump Coffee Stout is an Imperial Stout aged 12 months in Rittenhouse Rye Barrels, blended with Sump Coffee.
According to Moxy, Sump Coffee’s Scott Carey has been searching for worthy candidates for this year’s run and came up with two dozen varietals for the brewers to try. Perennial ‘cupped blind’ for two days before making a selection.
“Our “regular” Sump coffee stout will once again feature Colombia Narino. We’ve loved using this natural process coffee in the past and we’re thrilled to bring it back,” wrote Moxey. “I was a standout among some very exceptional coffees.”
A variant will be created for the tasting room featuring Costa Rica Las Lajas, a natural process coffee that provides a “ribbon of sweet milk-caramel and dark berries. “It was one of two varietals we featured at our anniversary party and was the hands-down staff favorite,” wrote Moxey.
