Switchgrass Distillery shines at San Francisco World Spirits Competition

Switchgrass Distillery has earned silver medals for their Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon and Rye at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition.  The competition saw nearly 5,500 entries this year, including over 500 Bourbons, making Switchgrass’s achievement particularly noteworthy.

According to the competition’s site, Switchgrass’s Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon and Rye were recognized alongside notable national brands such as Four Roses Bourbon, Hard Truth Distilling Company, J. Rieger, and Yellowstone.

“We never outsource our distilling, and our production methods have stayed steady over the past five years. We sweet-mash, distill on grain, do a low slow fermentation, and age in Missouri White Oak barrels,” said Switchgrass Spirits co-founder Sarah Miller.

Their award-winning Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon features notes of honey, cornbread, and a hint of citrus. The Bottled-in-Bond Rye begins with stone fruit notes, transitions to the spice characteristic of a classic rye, and finishes with a creamy, cherry cola undertone.

Unlike many other award-winning spirits these two are not special or limited releases but are part of Switchgrass’s solid, everyday offerings. They are available in local bottle shops and Schnucks stores across the state.

Understanding Bottled-in-Bond

The Bottled-in-Bond designation guarantees that a spirit meets specific legal standards defined by the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897. To carry this label, a spirit must be:

  • The product of one distillation season by one distiller at one distillery.
  • Aged in a federally bonded warehouse under U.S. government supervision for at least four years.
  • Bottled at exactly 100 proof (50% alcohol by volume).

This designation ensures the spirit’s quality and authenticity, providing consumers with confidence in their purchase.
