Time to learn you something. Yes, you might think red pandas are part of the bear family, BUT, you would be mistaken. they are actually part of an animal family that shares common traits with raccoons, weasels and skunks. So, imagine walking around in life with everyone on earth thinking you’re bear, while you’re really more of a weasel. That’s alot for anyone, and why St. Louis’ own Red Panda Pete deserves his own Urban Chestnut beer.

Red Panda Pete is one of two red pandas that call the St. Louis Zoo home. Winnie is the other. They come from regions like Nepal and primarily eat various species of bamboo, but also enjoy small treats like fruits. They also look very handsome on beercans.

For the 5th year, the Saint Louis Zoo and Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (UCBC) are teaming up to raise awareness about the importance of animal welfare and conservation. The partnership has resulted in the STL Zoo Bier, the first official beer of the Saint Louis Zoo.

This year’s new brew features the cutest red panda you’ve ever seen on the can. The beer will debut at the Zoo on Friday, May 19, and by May 26 at grocery stores and beer retailers in specially marked Urban Chestnut Can Sampler Packs. For every case of STL Zoo Bier sold at area retailers, Urban Chestnut will donate $3 to the Saint Louis Zoo to support its animal care and conservation work.*

“The Zoo continues this unique, local partnership with Urban Chestnut to not only provide a refreshing beverage to Zoo guests but Urban Chestnut continues to support our worldwide efforts to save animals from extinction,” said Michael Macek, Saint Louis Zoo Director. “We greatly appreciate the brewery’s generosity and partnership over the last four years, donating and raising over $16,000 for conservation and animal-care efforts at the Zoo. Adults can enjoy a quality, St. Louis-made craft beer while helping wildlife, which makes for a great collaboration.”

Since creating the partnership in 2019, 5,369 cases of STL Zoo Bier have been sold.

“As an animal lover and life-long advocate of the St. Louis region, this partnership means a lot to me and to the team at UCBC as well,” said David Wolfe, co-founder of Urban Chestnut Brewing Company. “The Saint Louis Zoo is such a significant organization, both locally and globally, and we’re thrilled to continue this partnership, especially at this point in time when it’s more important than ever to support our community.”

STL Zoo Bier will be sold in specially marked Urban Chestnut Sampler Packs (8pk 16oz Cans) alongside some of the brewery’s flagship offerings (2 16oz cans each Red Panda Light Lager, Zwickel Bavarian Lager, Schnickelfritz Weissbier & Fantasyland IPA). Red Panda Light Lager is a clean, crisp and easy drinking light beer with 4% ABV, 95 calories & 3.7g carbs (per/12oz).
