I’ve openly said I love me a good coffee stout, and lucky for me many are made right here in St. Louis, including one of the best I’ve ever had, Sump Coffee Stout from Perennial.
The annual collaboration between the brewery and the south St. Louis coffeehouse, Sump Coffee, and its owner Scott Carey is one I look forward to every year. The imperial stout is made from coffee grown in the Monte Alban region of Oaxaca, Mexico – and roasted in Saint Louis by Carey. The base stout is smooth and chocolatey, complemented by notes of pecan, toffee, pear, and vanilla. Sweet and bitter are balanced against each other, swirling around the full-bodied stout base to create a powerfully rich, yet amazingly crisp drinking experience. 11.5% ABV.
But now, it’s time for the return of Barrel-Aged Sump. This year’s BA Sump is an Imperial stout with Peruvian coffee beans roasted by Sump, aged 24-31 months in Heaven Hill and Wild Turkey bourbon barrels.
“This blend has bright aromas of brown sugar, raisin, and tobacco smothered in chocolatey fudge and burnt marshmallow,” wrote the brewer in an email. “Whiskey and oak character are prominent and complimented by the roasty, nutty, figgy notes of the Peruvian coffee. It is a smooth, rich blend that reminds us of a three-tiered chocolate fountain, a luxurious bearskin rug, and eating crème brûlée in a candlelit cave. 12.6% ABV.”
