If there ever was a town that could be described as a picture postcard, it may be Edwardsville, Illinois.
As you come off I-255 North youâll be led along New Poeg Road on your way to Main Street. There you’ll find an All-American small town and one of my favorite craft breweries in the area.
Recess Brewing, 307 N. Main Street, is home to a 5-barrel brewhouse that has 3 fermenters and 6 serving tanks. With ten taps for their in-house beers, youâll find year-round beers as well as seasonal and one-off brews.
Schoolâs Out
Owner and brewmaster Matt Flach was teaching high school science in Chicago when he discovered homebrewing.
âIt just so happened that there is another teacher who had been homebrewing for about 10 years already. So we started to talk about brewing together, bouncing recipes of each other and just making our brewing a collaborative effort, said Recess.  âNaturally the talks eventually led us down the path of thinking about opening our own taproom and what it would take.â
But what to call it?
The two teachers put their heads together and realized Recess was the perfect name. Â âIt has a very positive connotation in American society and is often used to refer to a fun time,â said Recess. âWe were aiming for a laid back environment where people could talk and hang out so we thought this name fit perfectly.â
They were right and nearly a decade later in 2013, Flach had a chance to realize his dream in his hometown of Edwardsville, Illinois.  He was able to purchase their current building and got to work, opening his brewery and taproom in November of 2014.
The taproom is open to everyone and can hold up to 100 beer lovers. Â This is the one and only place to fill up your growler or enjoy a pint of Recess beer.
Turning 5
December 7th, 2020 – Recess is inviting everyone to come out and celebrate their 5th anniversary, featuring the release of their annual imperial stout COMRADE!
The day will feature the release of 5 variants this year including a very special Double Barrel Comrade aged in bourbon and port wine barrels.
Live music begins at 2 and runs through 8 pm as well as STLBurgers food truck arriving at 3 pm.
Be sure to be at the taproom at 4 pm for a Happy Birthday toast celebration and get a pour of Double Barrel comrade for only $1 while supplies last.
The release schedule will be as follows
- 12pm – Comrade and Barrel Aged Comrade available on draft and in bottles
- 2pm – Coconut Comrade Available on draft
- 3pm – BlackBerry Cobbler Comrade Available of draft
- 4pm – Anniversary Toast!!! Double Barrel Comrade available on draft and in bottles
