New taphouse | bottle shop concept coming to STL and The Grove

Cm4ovEgWAAExYTXJust in time for the fall beer drinking season, one of St. Louis’ coolest neighborhoods will be home to the new Gezellig Tap House and Bottle Shop which will call the The Grove home.

Gezellig is the brainchild of Brandon Cavanagh.  Cavanagh will open inside the soon to be former home of his current establishment, The Demo, located at 4191 Manchester.

Gezellig is a Dutch word which can be translated as a cozy, fun, or nice atmosphere, but can also connote belonging, time spent with loved ones, the fact of seeing a friend after a long absence, or general togetherness that gives a warm feeling.  And what better way to bring people together, then serving the best local, national and international beer in a welcoming place among one of St. Louis’ most inclusive neighborhoods.

What we’ll be drinking

Along with 30 local, national, and international beers on draft, the shop will also offer cold packaged beer to-go, along with a space for popups, events, and performances.

“We want to elevate the craft beer experience in the St. Louis area, for the connoisseur and initiate alike, in a setting that captures general togetherness and conviviality,” explains Cavanagh.

The bottle program will be extensive. The focus will primarily be on large format beers, but there will be some emphasis on mix a six and a limited selection of local 6 packs to go.

“All of the beer will be refrigerated, there will be no warm storage,” said Cavanagh.  “Additionally the beer will be sorted by country, region, and/or state.”

Customers will be able to come in, peruse the coolers, select a bottle, and bring it to the bar. There a bartender (who will all have at least a Certified Beer Server level of Cicerone certification) will open the bottle and pour it into the proper glassware. Conversely, if someone just wants to be in and out, they can grab any of the bottles or 6 packs and take them to go for a 20% discount.

“There isn’t really anything like this in scope or ambition in St. Louis yet. This is closer in concept to The Bier Stein in Eugene, OR, Bier Station in Kansas City, or to some degree Sergio’s World Beers in Louisville, KY,” said Cavanagh.

Gezellig is looking to accommodate every level of beer drinker, from the initiate to the connoisseur. They also plan to embrace the growing fan base of Premiere League soccer matches as well as major soccer tournaments. Look for Gezellig to open its doors later this fall.
