MILLSTADT, IL — The folks at Millpond Brewing know their way around a lager. From crisp, hop-kissed pilsners to smooth, clean-drinking pale lagers, the Millstadt brewery has made a name for itself by brewing classic styles with focus and finesse. Now, they’re diving into one of the Czech Republic’s lesser-seen lager styles with the release of Polotmavý, a traditional “half-dark” amber lager that’s smooth, malty, and made for spring drinking.
What is a Czech Lager?
At 4.6% ABV, this new offering is built on a foundation of authentic floor-malted Czech Pilsner malt, layered with higher-kilned specialty malts and just a touch of dehusked roasted malt—enough to give it that signature deep amber hue without adding any harshness or bitterness. The result is a lager that pours beautifully and drinks even better.
Expect malt-forward flavors—fresh-baked bread, toasty biscuit, and graham cracker—balanced by the classic herbal spice and soft bitterness of Saaz hops. It’s rich and complex, but never heavy, with that signature Czech-style dryness and balance that makes you want another pour.
In true Central European fashion, Millpond is serving Polotmavý on side-pull draft at the taproom, bringing that signature creamy pour and soft texture to every pint. It’s also available in 4-packs to go for anyone wanting to stock their fridge with something a little different.
Whether you’re a lager purist or just curious to try something old that feels new again, this is one of those beers that rewards a slow sip—and a second round.
