In January 2020, I had the opportunity to sit down with Kevin Lemp, owner of 4 Hands Brewing Co., to discuss their ambitious new Scale of Complexity series. Designed as a brewer’s playground, the series allows the team to explore and showcase different hop varieties every few months, creating unique iterations of their hazy IPA.
The concept behind the series is rooted in the idea of hops terroir—the set of environmental factors that affect a crop’s characteristics. Much like wine, hops develop unique traits depending on where and how they’re grown, including soil, climate and farming practices. This terroir contributes to the distinct aromas and flavors that make each hop variety—and each edition of Scale of Complexity—so exciting.
Now, four years later, the series has reached its 11th release with Scale of Complexity – Krush, a 6.5% ABV hazy IPA that is heavily dry-hopped with Krush hops. This newest edition features lower bitterness but bursts with aromas and flavors of stone fruit, citrus and berries.
A look back: The evolution of Scale of Complexity
When Scale of Complexity debuted in August 2020, it quickly became a staple in 4 Hands’ portfolio. The inaugural release highlighted Galaxy and Motueka hops from New Zealand, delivering tropical fruit flavors with balanced bitterness. Since then, the series has rotated through a variety of hop combinations, each showcasing the unique characteristics of a particular variety.
Here’s a look at the series so far:
- Southern Hemisphere – Galaxy and Motueka hops brought tropical fruit flavors.
- Experimental Hops – Layers of grapefruit, mango and peach with HBC 344, HBC 522 and HBC 692.
- Citra – Bright flavors of grapefruit, lime, gooseberry and passion fruit.
- Sabro – A tropical twist with coconut and pineapple notes.
- Sultana – Pineapple and pine flavors stood out.
- Cashmere – Lemon, lime and melon created a refreshing profile.
- Mosaic – A medley of berry, tropical and earthy flavors.
- El Dorado – Pear, watermelon and stone fruit added sweetness.
- Simcoe – Classic pine, earth and citrus characteristics.
- Amarillo – Orange, grapefruit and floral notes rounded out the flavor.
Now, with the release of Scale of Complexity – Krush, the series continues to offer craft beer enthusiasts a unique experience with each new installment.
