Mississippi Culture rebrands popular beer as after recipe revamp

The brewing team at Mississippi Culture Oak Fermented Ales in Staunton has reworked and renamed a popular beer on its menu. The Belgian amber ale formerly known as “Deep Inside the Groove” is now “Golden Record.”

“This new beer is the culmination of over a year of work, and we are super proud of it,” wrote the brewery on social media.

Originally brewed in the fall of 2023, this recipe was called August Sun. It was based on traditional Bière de Garde recipes and included honey.

“It was delicious, but our customers were looking for something a bit more robust,” they posted.

To accomplish this, they removed the honey, swapped some of the caramel malt for a darker variety, and used roasted barley to amp up the roasted flavors. These changes give the beer a deeper red-brown color compared to the previous amber-colored farmhouse ale.

“It was a hit! We have now dialed that in with the latest batch, and it is drinking beautifully,” said the brewery.

On the nose, you’ll get hints of coffee and toasted bread, with saison spice cutting through.

“It is robust yet crisp and not quite as sweet as most amber ales. It comes in just shy of 5% ABV, which makes it perfect as a session ale.”

“Golden Record” is now available on draft in the taproom, with bottles coming soon.

The backstory of Mississippi Culture

Mississippi Culture, founded by Tracy Hutton, is a passion project born from a long journey through the craft beer world. Hutton, who started as a bartender at Recess Brewing, quickly rose to head brewer and dreamed of creating a space that embodied his Midwestern, blue-collar roots. Inspired by his upbringing along the Mississippi River, he envisioned a brewery that would capture the spirit of the region both in its culture and its wild, mixed-fermentation ales.

After purchasing a building in Staunton, Illinois, in early 2020, Hutton’s plans faced delays due to the pandemic. However, he persevered, and by April 2023, Mississippi Culture officially opened, offering unique brews like farmhouse IPAs and Belgian-inspired ales with a twist. Hutton’s experimentation with local ingredients and wild yeasts speaks to his commitment to craft and to pushing boundaries within traditional brewing styles.
