5 single malts not to miss at Whiskey in the Winter 2015

One of the many things we hope you learn from visiting Drink314, is that we will never claim to be experts in anything.  If we do, you have our permission to call bull on us.  That said, here are our picks of 5 single malt’s you should try if you plan on attending this years “Whiskey In The Winter 2015,” or if you’re not, just five to try when get the chance.

lagavulin-12yr-bottle-box#5. Lagavulin
The official whiskey list, includes Lagavulin, but it does not say which age.   This distillery’s standard is a 16 year, but we’re hoping for the 12 year which was most recently released in 2012.  It’s the 12th release of their Special Releases range.

Another from Islay, it takes its name from the famous whirlpool.  The scotch is described as “powerful, muscular, well-textured, and invigorating.”  Powerful for sure, but smooth and I thought it was fairly fruity as well.

31dover-glenfiddich-pack#3. Glenfiddich
Time to for a region switch.  Glenfiddich is from the Speyside region, (make sure to talk with the experts about the differences in the regions, it’s facinating.)  You’ll find offerings of 12, 14, 15, 18 and 21 year, but we’re recommending the 12.  It’s mellow, sweet and subtle.  You’ll love it.

dstob.12yov2#2. Deanston
There are three selections to choose from by Deanston, who’s distillery is located in Stirling.  We recommend the 12 year for no other reason than for the past few years we’ve seen it pop up on more then enough ‘Best of’ lists to convince us it’s worth the pour.

And back to Islay we come to try one single malt I’ve only read about, but actually have never seen. The Octomore 6.3 Islay Barley is said to be among the most heavily peated whiskies in the world.  At $190.00 a bottle, not trying just a bit would be sinful.
