Civil Life pulls year-old Oktoberfest from Illinois shelves. What you need to know.

Civil Life octoberfest

St. Louis beer folks know Civil Life’s Oktoberfest as one of the city’s great fall traditions—malt-rich, toasty, and brewed with the kind of obsessive care that makes beer nerds nod in quiet respect. But this week, Illinois drinkers got a surprise: some 2024 Oktoberfest—as in, last year’s batch—showed up in stores.

The discovery came from a loyal customer named Tom, and Civil Life’s Facebook post tells the story best:

“A huge thank you to our customer Tom for being eyes on the street!!!! Some Civil Life Oktoberfest from 2024 has reached store shelves in Illinois a year after it left our warehouse… However, a year-old Oktoberfest will not in any way taste the way our brewers intended it to taste. It was glorious last year when it was fresh… This year’s batch is glorious as well!!!!”

Freshness Matters
Civil Life’s post pulls no punches on why this is a big deal:

“We watch dissolved oxygen closely and maintain high quality standards for all our beers… nothing is more dear to us than our reputation. When you pick up a Civil Life beer, I want you to know that we always guarantee it and we take pride in all the cans and kegs we ship.”

In beer terms, a malt-forward Oktoberfest lives and dies by its freshness. After a year, the subtle caramel and biscuit notes fade, leaving something flatter and less “Civil Life.”

What to Do if You Bought One
Jake Hafner, Civil Life’s founder, is making things right—personally. The post lays out two simple options: return it to the store for an exchange, or email Jake directly (jake@thecivillife.com) for a swap at the brewery or your home. And if you see a 2024-dated can on a shelf, they want a photo and location. Bonus: merch for your troubles.

Looking Ahead
Right now, all hands are on deck pulling the old beer and replacing it with the fresh 2025 batch. After that, Civil Life says it’ll be rethinking its Illinois distribution to make sure this never happens again.

Why You Should Seek Out the New Batch
Civil Life’s Oktoberfest is one of those beers that feels like the season—amber pour, bready aroma, and that easy-drinking balance between malt sweetness and crisp hop finish. This year’s is, in Jake’s own words, “glorious.” The kind of beer worth crossing the river for—just check that date on the bottom first.
