Which Urban Chestnut beers are perfect for a fish fry?

As Lent is underway, it’s once again time for the annual fish fry signs to pop up all across my neighborhood. I’ve been to a bunch over the years, and dare I say, they are quite the party. One fish fry that is back again this year is at Urban Chestnut Brewing Company, at their Grove Bierhall on Manchester.

So, which of those UCBC brews go best with fried fish? We asked brewery owner Florian Klupent for his recommendations.

Zwickel (5.1% / 19 IBU

Pronounced ‘zv-ick-el’, this quite possibly the most popular beer by UCBC, and the flagship lager of their Reverence Series. Zwickel is unfiltered, unpasteurized, a German classic that finishes as a smooth-drinking, naturally cloudy bier.

“Zwickel has a great malt backbone which balances the flavors from the fish nicely,” said Klupent.

Stammtisch (5.4% / 40 IBU)

Loosely translated, “Stammtisch means ‘table for regulars’ and also become popular among UCBC fans, which is why it too is offered year-round. Stammtisch is a traditional German Pilsner featuring a blend of Hallertau and Strisselspalt hops, giving it a pronounced herbal and spicy aroma. It’s crisp and dry with a light grainy malt profile.

“It’s the forwardness of the Hallertau and Strisselspalt that helps cut through the fried batter, and makes this beer perfect at a fish fry,” said Klupent.

Schnicklfritz (5.0% / 12 IBU)

It’s the yeast that gives this Bavarian Weissbier a decidedly fruity and phenolic profile. You will get the clove and banana like essence on the nose and on the tongue, but that is why Klupent thinks this one is a fish fry winner.

“The fruity and very slightly tart Schnickelfritz compliments the lemon used on the fish and also helps to cut through the fried flavors,” said Klupent.
