So many times when we visit a place, we have done enough reading and research or in some cases, heard a ton of word of mouth that we think we know what to expect. Sometimes those expectations are on point and sometimes they fall short. There are other rare times that a particular winery gives us what we expect and so much more. When we visited Peaceful Bend Winery on a rainy afternoon, we got so much more than we ever expected and were left with fantastic wines and a beautiful memory.
As we pulled onto the grounds of Peaceful Bend, you see many typical sights of a Midwestern winery but after you pass through the tasting room doors, that’s where many of those similarities stop.
When you enter the doors, the hard work that Katie and Clyde have poured into this place is very evident. Before one word is spoken a wave of warmth and joy sweeps over you.
The tasting room is rustic and welcoming and on a cold day, a warm fire crackles away as a happy dog wags you a warm greeting. On our visit, Katie’s infectious smile warmed the room as much as the fire and you felt more like a long lost friend than just a welcomed guest.
The wine at Peaceful Bend is just as fantastic as the relaxed environment. There were some real standouts and the love and care that is put into the wine is clearly evident from the very first taste. The first selection that I want to feature is a dry red called the Forche Renault. The current vintage is a Noiret blend and this wine is amazing! Smooth and spicy with a strong fruit presence. This is a very good food wine and can stand on its own for late night sipping. The other wine that deserves its time in the spotlight is their Huzzah Valley. This sweet blush wine that uses the Catawba grape is so refreshing and delicious. This wine is perfect for dessert or for that summer time wine on the back porch.
The truth is that you really can’t go wrong with a Peaceful Bend selection. Each of the wines offers something unique and they can cover the tastes of just about any pallet. From the Heavy and Robust Norton to the crisp Courtois, they are a dry drinkerâs paradise. They also have the pallet covered for those that like things on the sweeter side. I felt like each selection was very memorable and would recommend just about any of them. The wines here may be made with many familiar varieties but what they do with them is far from ordinary.
