22 Missouri breweries team up for new collaboration beer
Over the last six years, I’ve asked dozens of brewers and brewery owners, what they like most about owning a brewery and brewing beer? The answers vary, but one common theme throughout is that they believe brewing creates community, that while brewing they are never alone, and a unique form of comradeship develops. It’s just such a comradeship that has brought together 22 Missouri brewers and associates to create one super Missouri style collaboration.
The beer, “Missouri Loves Company” is the Missouri Craft Brewers Guild‘s first collaboration beer ever. It came together as a way for the MCBG to create some revenue after the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out all the beer festivals, conferences, and events that normally drive operational funding. So, when in doubt, do what you do best, brew a beer.
“Craft breweries have a history of collaborative efforts for the good of our industry,” said Joleen Durham, co-owner and co-founder of Piney River Brewing Company, and president of the board of directors of MCBG.
The Beer
Missouri Loves Company (7-percent ABV) is a dry-hopped Hazy IPA that delivers a punch of fruit and citrus. Brewed with two-row, Vienna and pils malts, malted oats, and flaked wheat, it is hopped with Talus, Mandarina Bavaria, Chinook, and Summit hop. It will be officially released on Wednesday, December 16.
Sales from this collaboration brew will benefit the MCBG and support their efforts to protect and promote craft beer in Missouri.
The Brewing
Twenty-two Missouri breweries decided to join forces for what may be the largest collaboration beer ever, at least in Missouri. Together they selected the style, developed the recipe and the hop bill.
“Several of MCBG’s allied trade members generously donated supplies, ingredients, and financial resources to assist with the special project,” said Sherry Wohlgemuth, Executive Director of the Missouri Craft Brewers Guild. “Dave Johnson and the team from Missouri Beer Company volunteered to brew the beer at their brewery in O’Fallon, Missouri.”
“Creating ‘Missouri Loves Company’ was an exciting opportunity for us to transform that comradery into collaboration and we hope all the Show-Me State craft beer lovers out there enjoy this Hazy IPA as much as we enjoyed brewing it,” said Curt Marshall, co-founder and CEO of Tie & Timber Beer Co. and member of the MCBG board of directors.
The Name
The name of the beer genuinely represents the state’s craft beer community.
“In spite of the challenges all our members faced this year, we learned we are never truly alone,” said Wohlgemuth. “Even before a virus turned everything upside down, Missouri craft brewers helped each other solve problems, share ideas, and work together to make all Missouri craft beer better.”
